Abstract
In 1972, Oshima [1] published an excellent and comprehensive review, “Anisakis and anisakiasis in Japan and adjacent area”, based on widely scattered information in numerous Japanese publications. This is still one of the most important and useful reviews of the general biology of Anisakis and human anisakiasis in the world. In recent years, however, our knowledge on the life cycle and host relationships of Anisakis has increased considerably in Japan and it is now worthwhile to assemble new information. This paper introduces current knowledge on the occurrence of larval Anisakis in intermediate and paratenic hosts in Japan. As reviewed by Nagasawa [2], marine invertebrates (especially euphausiids) are the intermediate hosts of A. simplex and a wide variety of fish and squid serve as its paratenic hosts.
