Summary
Cholinergic fibers and terminals were visualized, with a polyclonal antiserum to human choline-acetyltransferase (ChAT), in hippocampi of 6 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and 4 control brains. The densities of senile plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) differed significantly between subregions in the AD brains. In contrast, the significant loss of terminals in the AD brains was homogenous in CA4, CA1 and the subiculum and presumably not related to the densities of SP and NFT in these subregions.
