Zusammenfassung
Betrachtet man die Geschichte der soziologischen Denktraditionen, könnte man leicht zu dem Schluß kommen, daß es sich bei der Soziologie nicht nur um eine schlecht organisierte, sondern sogar um eine konfuse Disziplin handelt. Schließlich haben sich Soziologen mit einem ganzen Spektrum von Phänomenen in alien möglichen Gesellschaften beschäftigt und sie haben sich dabei einer unübersehbaren Fülle verschiedener theoretischer Perspektiven bedient. Nichtsdestotrotz läßt sich hinter ihrem Unterfangen aber vielleicht eine Systematik erkennen. So kann man überzeugende Beweise dafür finden, daß die Soziologie ihre disparaten Forschungsfragen dadurch zu beantworten gesucht hat, daß sie sie letztlich drei Schlüsselfragen zuordnete, nämlich: dem Problem der Ungleichheit, dem der Kohäsion und dem Problem der Rationalisierung (vgl. Ultee/Arts/Flap 1992). Diese drei Probleme gab es bereits zu Beginn der Soziologie im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert und sie spielten eine zentrale Rolle sowohl in der frühen, der klassischen als auch der modernen Phase ihrer Geschichte. Auch heute sind diese Probleme noch aktuell. Man kann von ihnen als von den drei klassischen Probleme der Soziologie sprechen.
