Zusammenfassung
Als angewandte Botanik ist sie sowohl ein Teilgebiet der Botanik als vor allem der Forstwissenschaft. Sie beschäftigt sich mit den botanischen Aspekten des Waldes – von der Aufforstung bis zum Kahlschlag und betrifft heute vor allem das Ökosystems insgesamt. Standen noch in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten, seit der Begründung der Forstwissenschaft im 18. Jahrhundert, ökonomische Aspekte im Vordergrund, so spielen heute ökologische Ansätze eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle. Die Begründer der Forstwissenschaften hatten meist Natur- und Kameralwissenschaften studiert, waren oft auch Botaniker, die mit ihren Werken die Forstwissenschaften entwickelten.1)
