Zusammenfassung
Die europäische Wirtschaft vermochte während eines Jahrtausends so gut wie keine Fortschritte zu erzielen. ARISTOTELES galt als größte Autorität für alle wissenschaftlichen Fragen, ja sogar für Tatsachen. Seine Werke waren vielfach nur in Auszügen und Kommentaren zugänglich. Im Jahre 39I wird das Christentum zur Staatsreligion erklärt, alle heidnischen Kulte werden verboten, 394 findet die letzte Olympiade statt. Der menschliche Körper, wie überhaupt die ganze belebte Natur, werden als etwas Niederes, von bösen Mächten Besessenes angesehen. In der christlichen Welt kommt es geradezu zu einem Haß gegenüber «heidnischen» Naturwissenschaften. Nur die Medizin fristet noch ein kümmerliches Dasein.
