„There is no Planet B“ – „Girls just wanna have fun-damental rights“ – „The only minority destroying this country is the rich“ – „50 years ago, same sign: Make racism wrong again“. Diese wenigen Zitate von Protestschildern, wie wir sie in den vergangenen Jahren fast wöchentlich auf den Straßen bzw. in den Nachrichten sehen konnten, spiegeln nur einen Bruchteil der kritischen Diskurse wider, die sich aktuell in der Gesellschaft entwickeln. Sie symbolisieren dabei nicht nur die aktive Teilhabe an demokratischen Prozessen, sondern deuten auch auf die hohe Relevanz des kritischen und zukunftsorientierten Handelns im Kontext lokaler und globaler Verantwortung hin.

Plikats (2017) Vorschlag, den Kulturbegriff durch den Diskursbegriff zu ersetzen, beraubt die Fremdsprachendidaktik ganz und gar des Bezugs auf Natur, der in der Herkunft des Worts ‚Kultur‘ aus dem Ackerbau in ihm immerhin noch begriffsgeschichtlich angelegt ist (vgl. z. B. Eagleton 2000: 1 f.). In Plikats Konzeption werden die weit verbreiteten, aber meist implizit bleibenden kulturalistischen Annahmen explizit, insofern Materie, Technik, Körpern, nicht-menschlichen Akteuren und natürlichen Rahmenbedingungen kein Einfluss auf kulturelle Prozesse eingeräumt wird; Diskurse und Praktiken erscheinen als ausschließlich durch Sprache und menschliches Handeln bestimmt (vgl. Plikat 2017: 219 f.). Ein solches idealistisches und anthropozentrisches Verständnis des Foucault‘schen Diskursbegriffs ist allerdings nicht das einzig mögliche, wie die Aufnahme des Diskursbegriffs im Neuen Materialismus z. B. durch Barad (2007) oder Braidotti (2013) zeigt.
