Zusammenfassung
Während tierische Organismen auf ihre Umwelt vor allem mit Bewegungen reagieren, vollzieht sich die Anpassung der ortssteten Pflanzen überwiegend durch Änderungen von Wachstum und Differenzierung. Die sehr unterschiedliche Zeitskala dieser Reaktionen hat zur Folge, dass während der Evolution von Pflanzen und Tieren unterschiedliche Steuerungsmechanismen in den Vordergrund rückten: Tierische Bewegungen müssen im Bereich von Millisekunden bis Sekunden koordiniert werden, während pflanzliche Entwicklungsprozesse mehrere Größenordnungen langsamer sind, sodass eine elektrische Steuerung zugunsten einer chemischen Koordination in den Hintergrund tritt. Aus diesem Grund sind Phytohormone für die Regulation der pflanzlichen Entwicklung von zentraler Bedeutung.
