Zusammenfassung
Das Blut strömt – angetrieben vom Herzen – durch den Kreislauf. Es transportiert Nährstoffe, Metaboliten, Hormone, Atemgase (O2 und CO2) und Wärme. Der Erwachsene hat ca. 5 Liter Blut. Etwas mehr als die Hälfte davon ist wässrige Flüssigkeit (Blutplasma). Darin sind Ionen und organische Stoffe (z. B. Glukose) gelöst. Das Blut enthält rote (Erythrozyten), weiße (Leukozyten) und plättchenförmige (Thrombozyten) Zellen. Kleine Moleküle können aus dem Gefäßinneren in den umgebenden Raum gelangen und umgekehrt von dort in die Gefäße. Die Leukozyten sind für Abwehr von Krankheitserregern zuständig, sie können die Wände der Blutgefäße durchdringen und in das umgebende Gewebe auswandern. Thrombozyten und plasmatische Faktoren sorgen dafür, dass bei Gefäßverletzungen wenig Blut verloren geht. Wenn das Endothel zerstört wird, bleiben die Thrombozyten an dahinterliegenden Strukturen haften, und der Gewebefaktor (Tissue factor) leitet die Gerinnung ein.
