Die Blutgerinnung umfasst alle Vorgänge und Strukturen, die dazu dienen, das Blut in ausreichendem Volumen und in flüssigem Zustand zu erhalten:

Blutgefäße: Sie verhindern, sofern sie nicht selbst verletzt sind, den Austritt von Blut aus der Blutbahn.

Blutstillung: Sie tritt ein, wenn das Gefäß verletzt worden ist.

Fibrinolyse: Sie verhindert überschießende Fibrinablagerungen und beseitigt Fibrinniederschläge im Gefäßsystem.
