Summary
Measurements of Deformation in a Test Gallery as a Means of Investigating the Behaviour of the Rock Mass and of Specifying Lining Requirements. If an excavation is made in a stressed rock mass stresses are released and material migration is initiated. This process lasts for some time; it ceases as soon as a new state of equilibrium is reached. The deformation of the opening cross section and surrounding area depends upon the strength and deformation behaviour of the rock mass, the state of stress in the unworked rock mass, the cross section, the time, and also upon the lining and its properties.
It is important to make observations and systematic measuremens of all the effects exhibited by the rock mass. This enables conclusions to be drawn not only as to the behaviour of the rock mass etc.; the measured load-deformation-curves can also be used to determine the dimensions of the lining cross sections. Every kind of rock mass has a characteristic load-deformation-curve.
The numerous effective factors are impossible to be separated, but exert their combined influence in test galleries. Provided the galleries are correctly laid out, they are combined in the correct relationship to each other.
Further details are explained by means of practical examples, some of which are already completed and others are now in progress.
