Abstract

The primitive vertebrate dermis, like that of worms, consists essentially of two sets of collagen fibres arranged in opposing geodesic spirals around the body. Such a bias sleeve has the ability to bend without wrinkling. In most fishes, only lateral flexions need be accommodated, but the hagfishes, which are so flexible that they can tie themselves in knots (Strahan 1963) are presumably able to bend in other directions. The thickness of the dermis, compared with the epidermis, varies with species, position on the body and stage of the life history. Early in vertebrate evolution the skin developed a capacity for mineralization by calcium phosphate. Experts do not agree on the homology or phylogeny of the hard tissues, but it is evident that the extent of mineralization has been reduced, independently, in several lines of descent.
