Summary
-
1.
The skin, mainly the mucus cells, the superficial neuromasts, the taste buds, and the organs of Fahrenholz were studied by light microscopy in all recent genera of the Dipnoi and the Brachiopterygii.
-
2.
The Dipnoi have one type of large mucus cell in the epidermis. The Brachiopterygii show two different types of mucus cells: large so-called “club-cells” and small granular-cells. All mucus cells secrete their contents onto the surface of the skin.
-
3.
Taste buds are confined to the mouth region and in the Brachiopterygii, are extremely numerous on the upper side of the tip of the tongue. Sensory organs which differ from common taste buds were found in great number in the skin of Lepidosiren, and less numerous in the skin of Protopterus.
-
4.
Crypt-like so-called “organs of Fahrenholz” were found in the skin of the head of Calamoichthys calabaricus. They are confined to the head region in Calamoichthys and Polypterus delhezi and are very numerous on the upper side of the snout. Similar organs of Fahrenholz occur in all three genera of the Dipnoi. In the lungfish they are distributed all over the body, with the exception of the unpaired fins. However, they are most numerous in the head region.
-
5.
The organs of Fahrenholz in the Dipnoi are always sunken in the dermal layer of the skin; those in the Brachiopterygii never are. In their basal portions, the organs of Fahrenholz have a one-layered sensory epithelium which rests on a layer of supporting cells. Long, narrow wall-cells form the upper part of the crypt. The organs of Fahrenholz lack mucus cells. However, in their cavity they contain mucus derived from the epidermal mucus cells. A cilium was found in the sensory cells and upper wall-cells of only the Brachiopterygii.
-
6.
The organs of Fahrenholz in the Brachiopterygii are surrounded by mantle cells and thus shielded from the ordinary epidermal cells. Also, they are always separated from each other. The organs of Fahrenholz in the Dipnoi lack mantle cells. They occur in groups in Neoceratodus, and sometimes are situated so close to each other in Lepidosiren that they can share a common upper part and a single external opening.
-
7.
No basic differences were found between the organs of Fahrenholz of different sized Dipnoi. Only the size of the organ, the size of the cells and nuclei, the number of cells concerned, and the length/width ratio of the organ varied.
-
8.
The organs of Fahrenholz in the Brachiopterygii and the Dipnoi are innervated. The silver-impregnation of the neurofibrillae (Bodian-Ziesmer) showed that free nerve endings formed fine fibrous networks which were especially dense around the organs of Fahrenholz.
-
9.
The function and the significance of the organs of Fahrenholz are completely unknown. They are discussed in connection with the special mode of life of the Brachiopterygii and the Dipnoi.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
-
3.
