Way; Collaborate in Diverse Teams; Explore the Problem Space; Learn Through Experimentation; Embrace Uncertainty; and Envision a Radically New Future.

Abstract

The last few years have seen a growing discourse around Design Thinking as a mindset, rather than just a toolbox of methods. Subsequently, one of the questions which arises in the field of professional education is whether and how the design thinking mindset can be effectively taught. This chapter presents a conceptual approach with empirical illustrations for teaching the Design Thinking Mindset for Innovation which consists of six elements: Think & Act in a Human-Centered Way; Collaborate in Diverse Teams; Explore the Problem Space; Learn Through Experimentation; Embrace Uncertainty; and Envision a Radically New Future. This is a practitioner’s approach, as opposed to presenting the findings of an academic study. Using the HPI Certification Program for Design Thinking Coaches as a case study, we showcase the implications and effects of teaching the design thinking mindset, in addition to the process, methods and tools. In particular, we describe the newly developed Design Thinking Deep Dive: the two-day training module which kicks off the 20-day long program. This chapter provides insights for educators and innovators on how starting with the mindset can add value to a long-term education program, by encouraging participants to look at design thinking as a holistic approach.
