Zusammenfassung
Liebe wird bei Thomas von Aquin zugleich als Affekt und als Tugend verstanden. Unter den Tugendbegriff der Liebe fallen sowohl die erworbene Charaktertugend der Freundschaftsliebe als auch die Glaubenstugend der Liebe, die eine Gottesgabe ist. Zugleich besteht Thomas darauf, dass Affekt und Tugend völlig disjunkte Begriffe sind. Die Spannung zwischen diesen auf den ersten Blick schwer vereinbaren Aussagen kann dann aufgelöst werden, wenn man den Begriff der Liebe als analogen Begriff auffasst und mit Thomas’ Theorie der menschlichen Seele und der rechten Ordnung und Ausrichtung ihrer Teile zusammenbringt. Eine solche Deutung ist auch systematisch fruchtbarer als platonisierende und deflationäre Interpretationen der Liebe als Affekt und Tugend bei Thomas. Die große Erklärungskraft seines Ansatzes wird abschließend dadurch zusätzlich erhellt, dass sie mit zeitgenössischen Liebestheorien kontrastiert wird. Dabei fällt die Wahl auf Martha Nussbaum, weil sie sich wie Thomas an einer aristotelischen Anthropologie orientiert und wie dieser eine kognitivistische Theorie der Emotionen und Affekte vertritt. Anders als Thomas verfügt sie aber nicht über eine ausgearbeitete Theorie der Seele. Ferner geht sie von einem univoken Begriff der Liebe als Emotion aus, die in der Konsequenz als so problematisch erscheint, dass sie nicht ohne Spannung zu den Grundgütern eines gelingenden menschlichen Lebens gerechnet werden kann.
