Zusammenfassung
In dem Beitrag wird innerhalb eines Rational Choice-Rahmens zu erklären versucht, auf welche Weltregionen sich die öffentliche Kommunikation des Vatikans konzentriert und welche Regionen im Vergleich dazu eher wenig Aufmerksamkeit finden. Anhand der Fidesnachrichten für das Jahr 2008 wird mittels einer logistischen Regressionsanalyse für 150 Länder gezeigt, dass Merkmale der Opportunitätsstruktur wie etwa die Wettbewerbssituation im religiösen Markt eines Landes die (regionale) Schwerpunktsetzung in der öffentlichen Kommunikation des Vatikans maßgeblich beeinflussen.

Die in diesem Beitrag verwendeten Daten entstammen einem Forschungsprojekt, das ich zusammen mit Michael Zängle durchführe. Eine erste Analyse eines Großteils der innerhalb dieses Projekts gewonnenen inhaltsanalytischen Daten wird demnächst in der Monographie „Trends and Patterns in Papal Communication“ (Ohr und Zängle 2020) erscheinen. Diese Daten beruhen auf einer vollständigen Inhaltsanalyse aller Fidesnachrichten der Jahre 2003 bis 2015 und der päpstlichen Enzykliken seit 1823, jeweils in englischer Sprache.

Fides News, in Rom sitzend, muss zwar taktisch Rücksicht nehmen auf die womöglich repressive Religionspolitik eines Landes, ist aber nicht seinerseits durch diese Repression unmittelbar behindert. Der Vatikan, die Kurie, die Redakteure der Fidesnachrichten sind also frei, gerade über die Unfreiheit der Kirchen in schwierigen Kontexten mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit zu berichten.
