Zusammenfassung
Die religionspolitischen Regime Europas befinden sich gegenwärtig unter erheblichem Anpassungsdruck. Vor dem Hintergrund eines wachsenden weltanschaulichen Pluralismus und der einwanderungsbedingten Präsenz religiöser Minderheiten sind politische Konflikte über Status und Rechte religiöser Gruppen, die öffentliche Zurschaustellung religiöser Symbole sowie Religionsunterricht an öffentlichen Bildungseinrichtungen zu zentralen Herausforderungen europäischer Demokratien avanciert (Bader 2007; Casanova 2007; Liedhegener 2008; Minkenberg 2008; Monsma und Soper 2009; Willems und Minkenberg 2003). Trotz ihrer Bedeutung für die Bereiche Immigration und Integration, Sozialpolitik und gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt sowie für Fragen der öffentlichen Sicherheit und des Terrorismus fangen wir erst langsam an zu verstehen, wie die Staaten Europas auf diese Herausforderungen reagieren.
