Abstract
This article raises the question whether human resources management (HRM) research should continue taking the bilateral employment relationship as an almost exclusive starting point for theory building and applied research. The hypothesis that a network-based servicization of value creation fosters a proliferation of triangular work arrangements is derived from a synthesizing literature review. This provides a fundamental challenge for HRM research, regardless of whether it is viewed through the lenses of personnel economics, institutionalist accounts or organizational behavior approaches. Triangular work arrangements have implications for single HRM practices as well, as they interfere with the institutional foundations of HRM. Building on a typology of triangular work arrangements that uses the quality of business relationships and workers' qualification profiles, possible inroads for theoretical and empirical management research are outlined, which may assist a more thorough inquiry into interorganizational HRM.
