Zusammenfassung
Aus herbstlich vergilbenden Blättern verschwindet (abgesehen von den Sehließzellen) Stärke ebenso wie Chlorophyll; Sachs (1863), der den Stärkeschwund in den„ saftigen“ Blättern verschiedener Pflanzen beobachtete, schließt auf einen Lebensprozeß, durch den Stärke und Chlorophyllsubstanz vor dem Abwerfen der Blätter auswandern und für eine spätere Vegetationsperiode erhalten bleiben, „so daß nur das entleerte Zellengerüst des Blattes abgeworfen wird“. Sachs betont das Sinnvolle dieses Vorganges: „Es wäre eine unbegreifliche Verschwendung der eigentümlichsten Kräfte der Vegetation, wenn die in den Blättern enthaltenen Stoffe, deren Bedeutung für das Wachsthum wir wenigstens im Allgemeinen kennen, geradezu zerstört würden, während die Auswanderung dieser Stoffe in den Stamm zum Zweck der Aufbewahrung für spätere Verwendung ein schönes Beispiel von der inneren Ökonomie der Pflanzen liefert.“
