Zusammenfassung
Für die „Umwandlung“ von Kohlenstoffdioxid in Kohlenhydrate und für den Aufbau von Aminosäuren und Sekundärmetaboliten benötigen grüne Pflanzen neben Licht und Wasser auch Mineralsalze. Diese müssen bei höheren Pflanzen über die Wurzeln und die Sprossachse an die Orte der Assimilation transportiert werden, in der Regel ist dies die Mesophyllschicht der Blätter. Gleichzeitig müssen die Assimilate in Speichergewebe wie Samen, Früchte und Wurzeln abgeleitet werden. Hierzu benötigen Pflanzen effektive Transportmechanismen und effiziente Transportbahnen.
