Multi-Photon Monomolecular Photoprocesses in the Ground Electronic State

Abstract

All of the photochemical processes studied so far are associated with the excitation of atomic or molecular electronic states only. Therefore, photochemistry should more exactly be called the photochemistry of excited electronic states or electron photochemistry. On the other hand, in chemistry one generally has to deal with processes involving electronically unexcited molecules. In the ground electronic state molecules are distributed over the vibrational, rotational and translational degrees of freedom. If the energy stored in these degrees of freedom exceeds some minimum value, chemical reactions become possible. Such reactions, with molecules in the ground electronic state, play a very important role in chemical technology. Unlike photochemical reactions, they are termed thermal since they take place under equilibrium thermal excitation in which the contribution of thermal radiation is negligible1.
