Abstract
We present an investigation of the validity of the pseudo steady-state approximation of the one-dimensional control volume conservation equations for the ram accelerator. It is found that this assumption is justified for most current ram accelerator operating modes. We also expose the limitations of one-dimensional conservation equations to predict the performance of ram accelerators. These shortcomings are exposed with the use of a simple, ideal ram accelerator cycle.
