Abstract
A recently published, multiple statistics study using a very detailed regional data basis of West Germany was designed to illustrate the relationship between the “new type of forest decline” and site conditions in a coherent manner (Neuland et al. 1990). It revealed no correlations between damage classes based on the degree of needle loss and SO2 emission and NO3 and SO4 deposition, but yielded statistically significant positive correlations with a number of site influences (e.g. soil, elevation and exposition, climate, forest management etc.). Thus, the authors found that needle loss is by far more pronounced on sites with limestone soils with a high buffer capacity than on sites with podsolized soils. The influence of soil is also most evident for “acute yellowing”1, the most spectacular syndrome of the “new type of forest decline”. However, in contrast to the syndrome needle loss, acute yellowing is restricted to acid soils with a base shortage and is of only regional importance (Kandler and Miller 1990/1991). Nevertheless, it is possibly the main decline type in, e.g. the southeastern part of the Bavarian Forest (Blank et al. 1990).
