Sexual Compatability and Species Concept in Ectocarpus Siliculosus (Ectocarpales, Phaeophyceae) from Italy, North Carolina, Chile, and New Zealand

Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 22))

Abstract

Several sexual strains of Ectocarpus with differing morphology originating from the Mediterranean, NW Atlantic, SE and SW Pacific were studied under culture conditions. The sporophytic and gametophytic phases are anisomorphic to a varying degree and both show morphological variation primarily dependent upon temperature. In crossing experiments zygotes formed in all combinations of strains, however, the viability of hybrids between northern and southern strains was reduced. In some crosses the hybrids were incapable of forming intact meio-sporangia but showed normal mitotic spore formation. These strains are considered to be members of one species Ectocarpus siliculosus, which is divided into geographical races or subspecies. They are sexually isolated, but can form hybrids, which are fertile on the basis of mito-sporangia.
