Abstract
Unlike the other sensory modalities, pain contributes little to our knowledge of our surroundings. Rather, it informs us about threats to our bodies, from outside or within them. In so doing it protects us from permanent damage, and is thus indispensable for a normal life. If we were not warned by pain, during the most ordinary everyday activities we would often injure ourselves and soon be severely maimed.
