Abstract
Most of our knowledge of invertebrate visual systems has come from studies on arthropods and molluscs. Relatively little is known about the function of visual structures in other invertebrates. Thus many of the principles of invertebrate visual information processing have been evolved by using the eye of the horseshoe crab Limulus as an experimental preparation (Hartline and Graham, 1932; Hartline et al., 1952). These and subsequent excellent studies have been reviewed by numerous authors. Elsewhere in this handbook series other ways of viewing can be found concerning the receptor potential of the visual cells, theoretical considerations about the process leading to electric potential response, and the generation of action potential trains related to behavioral responses of intact animals (Vol. I, Ch. 8; Vol. VII/2, Ch. 6–8,10).
