Summary
The correlation between the P 490 concentration and the sensitivity of the blue-green UV-sensitive photoreceptors Nos. 1–6 of the blow flyCalliphora is analysed by adaptation experiments with intracellular recordings.
Chromatic light adaptations lead to specific variations in spectral efficiency curves. The variability in UV and blue-green sensitivity is presumably caused by two independent visual pigment systems in one rhabdomere, by a UV pigment comparable to that ofAscalaphus, and by a blue-green pigment comparable to that ofEledone (Figs. 1–6).
The sensitivity of the receptor soon after a light adaption (3–10 min) is directly proportional to its respective concentration of visual pigment (Pigs. 17, 18). Hence follows that on the one hand each absorbed quantum supplies the receptor potential with the same amount, irrespective of the metarhodopsin-rhodopsin concentration of the rhabdomere membrane present, and on the other hand it provides automatic self-screening by increasing metarhodopsin concentration (Fig. 19a, b).
The temporal adjustment of the visual pigment concentration can be mathematically expressed as a simple photochemical equilibrium reaction. The test results confirm the theoretical data.
Adaptation illuminations with mixtures of blue and red light which approximately simulate the physiological light composition cause a high concentration of visual pigment to be constantly present in the receptor (Fig. 20).
