Abstract
Thorough knowledge of anatomy and anatomical variations are prerequisites for liver transplantation. In whole organ liver transplantation, knowledge of anatomy of hilar structures and hepatic veins is necessary but in split liver transplantation additional insight in intrahepatic anatomy is of paramount importance to ensure two viable grafts of sufficient size and with usable vascular and biliary tributaries. Understanding of the concept of functional anatomy and segmentation of the liver represents the basis for splitting the liver for transplantation purposes. In this chapter both the concept of functional anatomy of the liver and the descriptive anatomy of the hepatoduodenal ligament, the intraparenchymal branches of the portal triads and hepatic veins are pointed out. Both aspects are covered with splitting the liver for transplantation in mind. However, the next chapter focuses entirely on the consequences of liver anatomy for the splitting surgeon.
