Was haben die Spitzensportlerinnnen Anni Friesinger (Eisläuferin) oder Sandra Völker (Schwimmerin) gemeinsam? Alle beide leiden sie unter Asthma bronchiale. Die Liste der Leistungssportler mit Asthma bronchiale ist sehr lang und widerspricht unseren gängigen Vorstellungen vom Krankheitsbild: Diese Menschen sind beruflich nicht nur sehr erfolgreich, sondern dies auch in einem Bereich, der als unvereinbar mit der Erkrankung gilt. Asthma zählt zu den häufigsten chronischen Erkrankungen im Kindesund Jugendalter. Trotz der hohen Verbreitung von Asthma in der Bevölkerung — man spricht von ca. 4–6 Millionen Betroffenen in Deutschland — ist es ein Krankheitsbild, das mit vielen Klischees, wie „man darf nicht Sport treiben“, „man ist nicht belastbar“ oder auch „ist doch alles rein psychosomatisch“, verbunden ist. Asthma ist ein Krankheitsbild, das oft stark unterschätzt wird („So ein bisschen Asthma ist doch nicht schlimm. Es gibt viel schlimmere Erkrankungen.“), andererseits ist Asthma der häufigste Grund für das Aufsuchen der Notaufnahme. In Deutschland sterben pro Jahr mehr als 3.000 Personen an den Folgen der Erkrankung, d. h. alle 3 Stunden stirbt ein Bundesbürger an Asthma.
