Die Fähigkeit des Herzens, Blut zu pumpen, ist von der uneingeschränkten Funktion der Herzklappen abhängig. Die Atrioventrikular- und die Semilunarklappen, die als Ventile die Druck- und Flussbeziehung zwischen Vorhof und Ventrikel einerseits und zwischen Ventrikel und den Kreisläufen andererseits steuern, sind für die jeweilige Aufgabe optimal angelegt. Jede Klappe durchläuft während eines menschlichen Lebens etwa 2,6 Billionen Schluss- und Öffnungszyklen [1].
