Zusammenfassung
Die internationale Politik und die Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) umspannen ein weites Feld. Der Gegenstandsbereich und die Disziplin, die sich mit ihm beschäftigt, sind seit langem fest etabliert. Allerdings tauchen zumeist unterschiedliche Begriffe auf, wenn nach schnellen Assoziationen zu den üblichen Denk- und Handlungsmustern gefragt wird. Bei der Disziplin erscheint an vorderer Stelle üblicherweise der „Realismus“ (vgl. hierzu die Beiträge von Gottfried-Karl Kindermann und Carlo Masala in diesem Band), beim Gegenstandsbereich eher der Begriff des „Pragmatismus“ – allerdings mit seinen umgangssprachlichen Assoziationen einer jeglichem „Idealismus“ abholden, „nicht-ideologischen“ Flexibilität, die an Opportunismus grenzt. Wie ein Blick in gängige Handbücher zeigt, hat der Begriff des Pragmatismus in der disziplinären Reflexion bislang allerdings keinen prominenten Platz. Umso erfreulicher ist es, dass die Herausgeber dieses Handbuchs dem Pragmatismus als einer mit gängigen prominenten „-ismen“ der Disziplin durchaus vergleichbaren Theorie einen eigenständigen Beitrag eingeräumt haben. Dies erscheint insofern gerechtfertigt, als der Pragmatismus gerade im letzten Jahrzehnt nicht nur in der Philosophie eine „Renaissance“ erlebt hat (vgl. Sandbothe 2000b, Margolis 2004), sondern auch in den IB zunehmend auf Interesse stößt.
