Zusammenfassung

Der Begriff der Institution zählt zu den klassischen Grundbegriffen der Soziologie. Er hat das Fach seit dessen Anfängen begleitet. Wichtige Theorievertreter wie Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim und Talcott Parsons haben sich ausführlich mit ihm auseinandergesetzt. Zugleich bezog sich die deutsche Kulturanthropologie an zentraler Stelle auf Institutionen, wobei die Arbeiten Arnold Gehlens und Helmut Plessners hervorzuheben sind. Bis in die 1960er Jahre war die Theorieentwicklung in Deutschland diesen Einflüssen sehr stark ausgesetzt (Schelsky 1970; Luhmann 1965).
