In den letzten 15 bis 20 Jahren untersuchten zahlreiche Studien den Zusammenhang zwischen dem sozioökonomischen Status und der Gesundheit von Personen. Der Befund ist eindeutig: Mit steigendem sozioökonomischen Status - gemessen etwa an dem höchsten Schulabschluss, der beruflicher Position, dem Einkommen bzw. der Schicht - geht eine geringere Morbidität und alterstandardisierte Mortalität einher. 1 Dieses Muster zeigt sich selbst bei geringen Unterschieden des sozioökonomischen Status (Siegrist 2001: 37).
