Zusammenfassung

Mit Themen der Kognition haben sich die Philosophie und die Spezialwissenschaften schon seit der Antike befasst. Dies betrifft nicht nur philosophische Grundfragen wie etwa die, was Erkenntnis eigentlich ist oder wie man den Begriff der Erkenntnis definieren soll, welche Arten von Kognitionen — etwa Wahrnehmung (s. Kap. IV.24), Meinung oder Wissen (s. Kap. IV. 25) — es gibt, sowie ob und wie wir gesicherte Erkenntnis erlangen können — Themen, die schon in Platon s Dialogen Menon, Theätet und dem Staat behandelt werden. Auch war die Wahrnehmung schon früh Gegenstand naturwissenschaftlicher Abhandlungen, etwa der Optik des Ptolemäus (ca. 100–180) oder des im Mittelalter von dem bedeutenden arabischen Gelehrten Alhazen (965–1039/40) verfassten Buch vom Sehen oder Schatz der Optik (1021).
