Zusammenfassung
Die rezeptionsgeschichtliche Dominanz von Peirce, James, Dewey und Mead lässt leicht in Vergessenheit geraten, dass der Pragmatismus tief in der amerikanischen Philosophie verwurzelt ist. Entsprechend heterogen und facettenreich ist das pragmatische Denken, das weniger eine spezifische Theorie als vielmehr eine grundsätzliche methodologische Orientierung zu sein beansprucht. Gemeinsam ist den Pragmatisten unterschiedlicher Couleur in erster Linie die skeptische Zurückweisung erkenntnistheoretischer und metaphysischer Fundierungsansprüche. Der Mensch steht der Welt nicht als interesselos Erkennender gegenüber, sondern hat als kreativ Handelnder teil an ihr. Die Wirklichkeit ist demnach kein bloßes Datum, das sich auf isolierbare Elemente reduzieren und auf der Grundlage apriorischer Prinzipien oder formaler Axiologien mental oder begrifflich adäquat repräsentieren ließe. Der Maßstab für die Bewertung von Denken und Handeln liegt somit nicht in gegebenen Antezedenzien, sondern in den niemals vollständig determinierten Konsequenzen unseres experimentellen und fallibelen Umgangs mit der Realität. Vor dem Hintergrund eines fundamentalen Perspektivenwechsels vom Retrospektiven zum Prospektiven lassen sich die Implikationen dieser zentralen Intuition des Pragmatismus für unterschiedliche Bereiche und Disziplinen der Philosophie ausloten, die nicht in einer umfassenden Architektonik pragmatistischer Theorie aufgehen. Der Blick auf eine Bandbreite weiterer Klassiker des Pragmatismus, zu denen auch die an anderer Stelle ausführlich besprochene Nobelpreisträgerin Jane Addams zählt (s. Kap. 49), ist entsprechend nicht nur historisch interessant, sondern vermag zugleich das Ideal eines methodischen und systematischen Pluralismus mit Inhalt zu füllen.
