Zusammenfassung
Als transzendentalistischer Vorreiter des pragmatistischen Naturbegriffs kann Ralph Waldo Emerson vorgestellt werden, der naturromantische Topoi wie ›Geborgenheit‹ und ›Sehnsucht‹ in die Profilierung der amerikanischen Philosophie einführt (s. Kap. 5). Im Transcendental Club werden zudem objektive, teils sogar absolute Idealismen diskutiert, in denen die große Natur sich im Menschen ihrer selbst bewusst wird (vgl. Emerson 1971, 36). In den 1870er Jahren reibt sich der Metaphysical Club an der Unüberprüfbarkeit dieser transzendenten Schwärmerei; der hier veranschlagte Naturbegriff wird transformiert und auf mannigfaltige Weise in die wissenschaftsaffinen Studien der entstehenden pragmatistischen Methodologie implementiert. Vor allem die Nähe von ursprünglichem Leben und Natur, wie sie bei Henry D. Thoreau geradezu beschworen wird, tritt in ähnlicher Weise bei klassischen Pragmatisten wie William James und John Dewey und als gewöhnliche Erfahrung (vgl. Jung 2014) auch in der aktuellen Forschung des Pragmatismus auf. Einige auf diese Weise hervorgebrachte Bedeutungsverschiebungen reichen daher über Forschungsansätze und Weltanschauungen in andere zentrale Lemmata des Pragmatismus hinein und lancieren den Naturbegriff zu einer Art Schwerpunkt der pragmatistischen Forschung – auf diesem Weg bleibt die Konzeption der Natur mit den ontologischen, epistemologischen und ethischen Geltungsansprüchen aufs Engste verbunden (vgl. Hookway 2004, 136).
