Ecocritical Perspectives on Children's Texts and Cultures

Part of the book series: Critical Approaches to Children's Literature ((CRACL))

Abstract

In this chapter, Nyrnes explores the question of the pastoral through the study of two texts, Émile, Ou de L’éducation (1762, Emile or On Education) by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Tonje Glimmerdal (2009, Astrid the Unstoppable) by Maria Parr. Through focus on the landscape formations in the two texts, Nyrnes argues that one can find influence from and transformation of the classical Western topos, the pastoral, in a canonized text of Nordic children’s literature. Nyrnes suggests the transformation be called a winter pastoral. In her analyses, she draws on Schiller’s philosophy of nature and the sentimental, rhetorical topological theory, and theories within ecocriticism.
