Abstract

This paper is about a problem of “identity crisis” among Orthodox peasants in Ukrainian provinces of the late Russian Empire, which was initiated by “charismatic” religious movement of Maliovantsy. This crisis led to a formation of new non-Russian and non-Orthodox peasant culture which contributed to a building of a Ukrainian national identity not only from “above” through efforts of intellectual elite, but also from below through “cultural production” and innovations of Ukrainian peasantry.
