Abstract
This chapter explores how England and El Salvador have narrated past conflicts in the context of institutionalized forgetting. In the aftermaths of the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660 and the 1992 peace accords in El Salvador, legislators quickly implemented laws of amnesty and oblivion. Despite the differences in the nature of the conflicts and how they were settled, the political elite in both countries emphasised the importance of forgetting the recently ended civil wars to move forward to a peaceful future. Nevertheless, while post-conflict laws called for pardon and oblivion, they also provided different individuals or groups with opportunities to remember and to promote their own narratives of the conflicts.
