Abstract
This introductory chapter lays out the basic framework for the volume and discusses the “doubleness” of translation in terms of its context and politics. It emphasizes the fact that translation is a transformative act that can only produce a portrait, not an exact copy of an “original” and offers a brief overview of some of the elements that shape and exercise pressure on the work of translators and the reception of their translated texts. The chapter explains how the different contributions in the volume consider the various ways in which the historical and sociocultural conditions as well as the politics of reading and rewriting/translation can intersect and influence the highly charged act of translation.
