Abstract
As one quickly learns, the differential equations that can be solved by explicit analytic formulas are few and far between. Consequently, the development of accurate numerical approximation schemes is an essential tool for extracting quantitative information as well as achieving a qualitative understanding of the possible behaviors of solutions to the vast majority of partial differential equations.
