Abstract
Many investigators have studied the thermal decomposition of amino acids. Mechanistic pathways have been proposed to explain the decomposition. To confirm these accepted mechanisms further, a technique of continuous radiothermogravimetry has been developed.
Specifically labeled 14C-amino acids were heated and the evolved activity was continuously monitored by using a flow proportional counter. Data were obtained over the temperature range of 25°C to 950°C.
Data are presented to show that this technique can be used to correlate activity measurements with weight loss curves. Where more than one mechanistic pathway is considered, the continuous monitoring of the eluted activity aids in the elucidation of the correct pathway.
