Domestic Violence in the Anglophone Caribbean

Abstract

Violence against women has reached epidemic proportions making women the primary victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). While IPV has many negative impacts on victims it is one of the major contributors to women’s poor health. This chapter aims to examine the nature and extent of IPV in Trinidad and Tobago and to assess the impact of IPV on women’s health. Two primary data sources will be used. These are: (1) official crime data from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and (2) survey data from the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) 2018 Survey of Women’s Health in Trinidad and Tobago. Multiple regression analysis will be the primary means of assessing the relationship between IPV and women’s health. The study will provide information on how various dimensions of IPV affect health outcomes and will therefore assist in determining which dimensions of IPV are critical in developing interventions where health outcomes are concerned. The study will also examine whether family support and educational attainment can mitigate the negative impact of IPV on women’s health.
