Abstract
If a chapter equivalent to this one had been available 30 or 40 years ago, we would have seen a number of familiar topics such as bacterial pneumonias, bronchiectasis, and some viral pneumonias, but many other clinicopathologic conditions and concepts would be included. Children are still subject to pyogenic pneumonias from Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, although effective antibiotic therapy has markedly diminished the fatal consequences in the nonimmunocompromised child. Today, the latter qualification in the immune status of the host is the critical factor in the type(s) of offending pathogens and the anticipated clinical syndrome. One author (LPD) works in a tertiary care facility with an active transplantation program (bone marrow, kidney, liver, heart, and pancreas) and therefore we see many samples of opportunistic organisms and/or the tissue effects of various chemotherapeutic agents on the lungs in biopsies or limited resections (Table 4-1).
