Abstract
Body temperatures of birds have been recorded using a number of different techniques. Most often these have been types of “grab and jab”-methods that cause stress and disturb the birds to an extent inconsistent with the objectives of unbiased biological monitoring procedures. The use of telemetric methods has made it possible to monitor physiological parametres with minimal interference to the birds being studied. This method has now been used to record the natural variations in the body temperature of chicks of two species of alcids, the puffin Fratercula arctica and the Brünnichs guillemot Uria lomvia. They are both arctic, semi-precocial species, which could be expected to show some thermoregulatory adaptations to life in a cold climate.
