Abstract
Recent advances in the understanding of intermolecular interactions have led to new ideas about the interactions at interfaces between unlike substances, and these ideas are now being extended to interactions with biomaterials. Interactions at interfaces involve several kinds of intermolecular forces: dispersion forces, acid-base interactions, and the electrostatic attractions of ionic groups or of injected charges. This chapter reviews advances in: (1) acid-base interactions (including all hydrogen bonds) which had previously been labeled “polar”; and (2) the injection of electric charges upon contacting one material with another (“contact electrification”) and how this effect influences interfaces.
