Seasonal Colonization of Entomophages in the U.S.S.R.

Abstract

The first attempts to use entomophages by means of mass releases were undertaken in Russia at the beginning of the current century (Vasil’ev 1906, Radetskii 1911). However, the systematic development of this approach to biological control was not started until 1930 after the organization of the Biomethods Laboratory of the All-Union Institute of Plant Protection (AIPP). From 1930 to 1950 mass releases of the egg parasites, Telenomus spp., were widely used against Eurygaster integriceps Puton. Since 1934, and especially after the organization of a network of mass-rearing laboratories in the Ukraine in 1944, and later in other republics, egg parasites, Trichogramma spp., began to be used widely against many harmful Lepidoptera. Because of the labor and expense of using entomophages and the successes of chemical methods in the 1950’s, work was conducted on a small scale by individual researchers and small production laboratories.
