Abstract
Much thinking about the roles of IGF-I and -II is shaped by observations in the rat or mouse, although it is not clear to what extent these laboratory rodents reflect IGF system function or regulation in other species. For example, IGF-II is usually regarded primarily as a fetal growth factor because its postnatal expression is highly restricted in the rodent. However, in the human and other species, IGF-II levels are equal to or greater than IGF-I in the circulation and in various tissues of adults (reviewed ref. 1). In addition, current concepts about the importance of growth hormone induced IGF-I production in peripheral tissues are based on rodent studies and, to our knowledge, have not been supported by human data. In order to investigate the extent to which local patterns of IGF system expression are similar in the rat and human, we have compared IGF-I, IGF-II and IGF-I receptor gene expression in the kidney and ovary2–5.
