Abstract
The application of probabilistic methods for codifying structural reliability in the design and checking of individual structural components is well established. This follows the decades-long development of rational criteria for selection of safety factors on the basis of economy and risk. National and international regulatory and specification groups have incorporated new design manuals based on probabilistic criteria. These include civil, highway, marine, and geotechnical applications; materials including steel, aluminum, and concrete; and structural components such as beams, columns, connections, footings, and piles.
