Abstract
The study of the chemical events that are necessary for aggressive behavior to be initiated and performed is pursued by neurochemists, endocrinologists, and pharmacologists. Endocrinological and pharmacological studies of aggression share many features of research strategy, and yet the interactive effects of drugs and hormones on aggressive behavior are rarely investigated. It is common in behavioral pharmacology and endocrinology to employ receptor agonists and antagonists to remove or block the endogenous source of a transmitter or hormone, subsequently replacing it; researchers in both fields examine how the behavioral effects of hormone or drug manipulations are dependent on the dose of the agent and on the time course of action. A further common objective is to localize the anatomical sites of action within the brain that are critical for the behavioral effects of hormones and drugs.
