Abstract

In Greece human visceral leishmaniasis has been known for many years. Since 1885, a disease with an unknown aetiology called “ponos”, had characteristics similar to those of leishmaniasis [1, 2]. from the beginning of this century the disease was diagnosed in dogs in the area of Athens [3] and later in several other areas in Southern Greece [1, 4, 5, 6, 7]. in all cases the research on canine leishmaniasis was carried out in parallel with that on human leishmaniasis. So far as the leishmaniasis situation in N. Greece is concerned, there are limited data concerning only one area [8].
